Traveling as a Student
Go Anywhere!
Students can learn all over the world, and even if you are not a student you become one when you travel the world. Learning about new cultures something that is usually taught to students through a textbook with vocabulary words to memorize, but learning about a culture first hand is much more effective and enriching. There are lots of programs through schools and non-profit organizations that encourage and will even fund students to travel the world.
Go Everywhere!
One experience I would love to participate in is Semester at Sea. In this program, you spend a semester on a cruise ship traveling around the world exploring all sorts of cultures. It would be an incredible experience. The costs vary on your program, but since it is an educational trip, you can apply for financial aid and scholarships. Not only could you effectively travel the globe, but you would be able to do it at a price unavailable once you graduate, saving you thousands of dollars.
Be International!
There is just so much to see and do in every corner of the globe. This big spinning ball we know as earth is cram-packed with new things to learn, experiences awaiting us and good friends we have yet to meet. They say that traveling and getting to be familiar with international events is one of the best ways to educate yourself. You learn firsthand about cultures, peoples, languages, customs and so much more. If you are brave enough to try the local food, you can find new favorite food dishes. If you reach out to the locals anywhere you travel you can form new friendships. There is just so much that awaits the traveler – so get up and go!

Immerse Yourself!
It is recognized that surrounding yourself with native speakers of a language you want to learn is the quickest way to become proficient at an unfamiliar language. This process, known as immersion, is practiced by many students. It’s a great excuse, uh, I mean reason, to travel. Want to learn Spanish? Master the basics and move on to become fluent by living in Mexico for the summer! Don’t let yourself speak your native tongue, force yourself to speak Spanish in order to converse and get around. You’ll find you pick it up rapidly and that your accent is more natural and less forced than if you learned the fundamentals in a classroom far away. You’ll soon be able to add a foreign language to your skill set if you live in a place where they speak a different language and you are a determined learner.
