The Basics of Web Design 
Many people want to host their own website, but don’t know how. You have to do quite a bit more than just buy a domain name from GoDaddy. First, you need to have a computer that is configured as a web server. (You want to avoid all the technical issues you can, and a hosting company will help.) This just means that you have software that allows your computer’s programs to be continually running and is friendly to other users who might want to download data from your site. (Of course, if they can download documents, so can you – this will make your pc much more usable to you as well if it is set up as a web server.) Most computers can do this and there are free programs online such as Apache that manage the process for you. In addition Windows XP allows you to install a web server on your machine; Macs come with Apache.
Dedicated IP Address
Next, you have to have a static, or dedicated, IP address. So you’ll most likely need to contact your Internet Service Provider and pay the extra $5 or $10 to get a set of static IP addresses. This allows you to host your blog on its own address so to speak. Choosing to host your blog on a shared IP is kind of like the old fashioned party line telephone system. You know, you’ve seen it in the movies where people do not have their own phone lines, they have to share. It is best for you to have your own IP – just generally less complicated and better for SEO. Furthermore, you need to have a computer that is connected to the Internet at all times (seems self-evident, but I didn’t know that). Those are the basic steps, and there is quite a bit more than that in regards to managing your website once it is up. For those reasons, and the fact that most people do not have time to keep a website server running, it is usually easier to outsource that aspect. For instance, HostGator has a site hosting service that is relatively cheap. For those people who are more interested in web hosting, there are plenty of resources on the Internet.

Now you have your individual IP, you have bought your Iamsohotithurts.com domain and you are ready to begin! While thinking about web design, consider the purpose of your site. Another aspect that might seem self-evident but is not is to decide what you want your website to be about. Do you like to learn about outer space? Are you into technology and gadgets? Do you have a passion for the spotted liver honey pot ant in Western Nairobi or wherever it lives? Build your website around your interests and passions and you will always have something to talk about.
Consider Web Design and Lay-Out
Before you get too far into your website plan, keep in mind that you also need to have a pleasing design if you want folks to stay on your website. To keep traffic coming back, you need to have interesting things to say, valuable information and an eye-friendly layout. Overwhelming or confusing a user with too much data is worse than giving too little. Think about how clean Google’s home page is and you use it, don’t you? And you go back because you understand how to use it.
