Knowing Where to Start With SEO

Starting your first blog and wondering just how to tell the world that your product, or service or jewels of thoughts are out there for all to see? Now that you have chosen a format, template, theme and URL, it is time to invest a little effort in SEO. Contrary to any budding hopes and dreams you have for massive traffic, the idea that “if you build it they will come” has no place on the internet. Sites start out and go belly up daily, so if you want people to know that you have ABC product or XYZ service that will enrich and improve their lives, you need to put SEO to work for you and your newly created site. Importance of The Right URL

Hopefully you chose a blog name where the URL reflects at least one of the keywords you are targeting. Having your keyword(s) in the name of your blog is the easiest and best way to rank well in your particular niche. Got that covered? Good. Now be certain you include your keywords in your title tag. This is the phrase that users will see when they search Google or Yahoo or Bing. You have about 70 characters to say what your site is about and what makes it unique. Don’t be wordy. Pare this title tag down to the bare minimum to make sure it gets attention and has the right punch of user appeal while describing your site accurately.

What’s the Big Deal About Keywords?

There are other places to include your keywords. Be absolutely certain that you insist on your keywords as your anchor text for any links you request. This will help the bots that look at your site know just what it is about. Note: your anchor text is the description you use about your site in any inbound link. It is the text that goes inside the <a> tags in your html. When people use text in their tags such as “Click for More” they are losing out on a valuable opportunity for SEO. It would be better if they cited their ABC product or XYZ service in that link that folks click on. Make your anchor text short and sweet. Choose keywords that your keyword research says users actually type in if you want to capture the most traffic. For example, if your website name is ABCproductsforyou.com and you offer boxes for sale, is it likely that people will type in ABCproductsforyou.com when searching for boxes? No, of course not. They will likely type in “box,” “boxes,” “cardboard boxes” and the like. So pick a keyword that gets enough traffic but is not incredibly competitive and go for it! There are many tools to help you do keyword research. Google has several free tools that work well.

Put good descriptors on your images. Don’t forget: pictures are for readers, alt tags are for webcrawlers. So uses images, but label them appropriately and get credit from reader and web bot alike for your SEO savvy. Spiders and bots do not read pictures, so having appropriate words (i.e. alt tags) that reflect the image is very important. One word of caution about keywords: they are important but don’t overdo it. The practice of keyword stuffing is where in a link or title tags have keywords that are repeated and repeated and repeated again and again and again. Just like the last sentence, that gets old and the search engines will penalize you for trying to falsely boost your site. Use your keywords like salt – not too much or it ruins the flavor and appeal of your blog for the bots; users don’t much like spammy keyword stuffing either, by the way.

Okay, now you are ready to write your introductory paragraph. Don’t underestimate the importance of this piece of writing. It is the key to your whole site, as it tells the web bots and spiders just what your site is all about. They scan this paragraph and assume that it summarizes your entire site, so be certain you make it good with a sprinkling of keywords and niche terms to let the webcrawlers know just how to categorize your blog.
