Physical Therapy – After the Accident

After having my ACL surgically repaired due to a skiing accident, I knew what it meant to invest in the right kind of physical therapy products. Well, I say accident, but what I really mean is me pretending to be an 18-year old on the slopes. After the surgery I did what all post-op patients do: I went to physical therapy. After doing all the exercises my therapist planned out for me, I would lie on a table and a technician would bring out my least favorite machine.

They attach electrodes to your quad muscle and send electric shocks into your leg. This sounds like a torture device but it has a specific purpose. While your injured leg is in a brace and you’re on crutches, the muscles in your leg get weak. This machine stimulates the muscles and helps keep them strong. It sounds like a great tool but what they don’t tell you is that it is one of the most strangely painful techniques used in physical therapy. I am grateful to those who helped me recover, but sometimes late at night I break out into a cold sweat remembering that device.
