Putting the Self in Self-Improvement
Self-improvement books and lectures are great, but they are not effective unless you take the time to relate the concepts you are learning to yourself and to your own life. Self-improvement is called SELF-improvement because you are in charge of it yourself. Your book isn’t going to make decisions for you, and so it takes a lot of reflection to adequately make change in your own life. One thing I like to do is read a chapter of a self-help book then go for a walk. When you are walking, your mind and body is re-energized, and you can do some of your best thinking. Self-improvement books only work if you take time to think about the concepts and apply them to your own life.
