How To Survive French Class

French is fun but it is difficult as well. The situation is even worse if the French teacher doesn’t know what he/she is doing or is a bad teacher. This doesn’t mean learning French has to be painful. Follow these tips to survive french class!

Pay attention in class

I know it’s easier said than done, but pay attention to what the teacher is saying. Concentrate hard and TRY to understand! Trying is better than wasting your time and regretting in the end. Often teachers hint on important key points which you’ll find on your tests so always pay attention to what the teacher is saying. You can do this by sitting in the front row and sitting beside people who you’ll least likely small talk with. Sitting beside the intelligent people can turn out to be a huge advantage too.

Do your homework

This doesn’t mean mindlessly doing the activity sheets. Take your time with your homework! Go slow and treat it as a study/review tool. Always do homework at home, it serves as a better review than doing it an lunch or in class. It has a lot to do with the way your memory works. So, for the sake of optimizing your recall, follow this tip religiously. For technical reasons, I won’t go into exactly why this is so in this article.

Study everyday

I mean it. Those vocabulary sheets you get? Yeah, those long lists of jargon words. Memorize them. Use memorization techniques that work for you. It’ll do you good. Chances are those words will be on the quiz/test. Moreover, if you know the vocabulary by hear, when the teacher uses them in class it’ll act as a review, committing those words to your long-term memory; thus, saving you time in the long-run.

Practice

For your orals, try to put emotions into what you are saying; this will help to remember it better. Oh, humor works well as well. The more bizarre your lines are, the more likely you’ll remember them! Other than that, just ask your teacher for additional practice sheets. The more you do, the better you will become at French.

Think like the teacher

When you are writing compositions, try to display all your knowledge of the French language. This will give you more points than writing a well crafted story. Even if you like write J.K. Rowling, you’ll be doomed unless you creatively show all your knowledge of the language. This includes variations in sentence structures, grammar, vocabulary, word placement, etc. Risk taking is okay but stick with the safe stuff. Also, make sure to proof read your composition at least two times and have someone else proof read it at least once before handing it it.
