Ways To Learn German

German is a language that can come in handy, and as it’s closely related to English, it’s not difficult to learn. Some German words are practically the same as their English counterparts. For example, the German word Wind has exactly the same meaning as the English word, although it’s pronounced with a “v” sound. The German word Elefant also means the Englisch elephant, even though the two words are spelled slightly differently. In some cases, there is a big difference in the meaning of a word, for instance, the German word Gift means poison in English. Anyone who would like to learn German has a number of options to choose from.

The first option which normally comes to mind is a language school or a course at an adult education center. Most large cities have a variety of these to choose from, and they offer a variety of languages besides German. Sometimes, the courses have the advantage of being taught by a native speaker, and some people find it helpful to be studying with other people who are following the same goals. However, there are disadvantages to studying at a language school, one of which is that a course can be quite expensive. Along with the course fees which are often a couple of hundred dollars or more, there’s also the cost of transportation and sometimes, parking fees. And when one enrolls in a course, there’s always the uncertainty that one will be able to attend all of the classes, as illness or car problems can pop up all the time. If it’s an evening course, that can cause additional stress. When they get off work, most people only want to go home. Also, there’s the possibility that there won’t be a school nearby which offers a suitable course.

Another possibility is to take a course during a holiday in a German-speaking country. Although this option is also expensive, there’s not so much stress during a holiday. Germany, Austria, and Switzerland all offer a wide variety of visitor’s activites besides the language course, also, courses for advanced learners are generally easier to find in the countries where the language is spoken. However, one can normally only learn a limited amount during the few weeks that a holiday normally lasts, and many people wouldn’t want to spend their free time in a classroom. Unless one is in the position to spend a semester or year abroad, a holiday course is more suited as a supplement to a study of German rather as the main activity.

Then there are ways by which one can learn German on one’s own. Some correspondence schools offer courses in German, one of which is the Goethe Institut, and there are also a large number of universities which offer distance courses in German and other languages. Also, there’s the option of putting together one’s own study plan with books, CDs, and/or software. There’s a wide variety of self-teaching aids available. This option is normally the least expensive, especially if one gets their books from the library. With this option, one can study where and when it’s best for them, whether it’s at a desk at home that’s especially for studying, or in bed on a Sunday morning. Many people find that they learn better when they’re in a relaxed environment. However, there are people who won’t get the work done without the formal structure of a classroom. Everybody knows their own learning style, and which method would probably suit them the best.
