America’s Unemployed Competing With Young Adolescents For Part-Time Employment
The 24 month economic decline from which the has suffered has produced a cruel Darwinian job market for only the most persitant part-time job candidates. The employment trend of late has been an inquisition of middle-aged adults into the teenage employment market. Since there hasn’t been any significant job creation in the past 2 years for the traditional adult market place where education, certification standards and years of professional experience prerequisites gaurantee at least entry-level job positions , the contracted job market has led to fierce competion in other already contracted job markets such as the job market for teenagers.
If you just lost your career and need to pay child day-care, gas, your little brother, cigerettes, rent and your cell phone bill, there is no quicker escape route to getting cash in your pocket then waiting tables, or flipping burgers at a fast-food restraunt. Perhaps not burger, your new employment may require you to dunk chicken, deliver pizza, make submarine sandwhiches, or deliver General Zsao’s chicken to people who are working late into the night and have real jobs.
If you are desperately unemployed,age thirty or older and reading this article, you and have considered applying for a small part-time job in the above listed catagories, you will be directly competing with high school teenagers.Consider this scenario; you are 27, a newly minted MBA with a new born child and every known bill of credit due at the first of the month. You have logged many car driving hours traveling from interview to interview and now you are tapped-out of traveling finances and need to put together another war-chest budget to conduct some more job searches in the next season. Where do you get the funds from your parent? from your former classmates who are also in the same depressing and never ending fianancial quagmire? No, begging is not an option, as an adult you must be resourceful enough to adapt and find any kind of work to sustain you and your young family until favorable employment is found.
However, your MBA in logistics management or Finance means absolutely nothing to Billy-Rae your 18 year old assistant shift-manager at the local 24 hour pizzaria. He interviewed you for your job and was sympatheic enough to understand your desperate situation. Despite the fact that he considered you over-qualified and out of place for the working in a 24 pizza delivery operation, he still hired you into a position where you would eventually quit without him having to fire you for cause;
delivering pizzas on graveyard shift. The situation you assumed was not entirely your fault. The younger teenage kids with cars were all seniors in high school, and they could not work beyond 12am as their parents stipulated. The younger teenagers who cooked and handled the cash registar were constricted to not working past 10pm. The graveyard shift was the only shift available, albiet dangerous depending on where you had to deliver pizzas,but at least you made ten dollars and hour plus the occasional tip. The schedule had one benefit; in case you recieved a phone call during normal work hours–you were at home to recieve the call.
This nightmare described above is taking place across America. As underemployed or unemployed college gradutes and newly downsized, layed-off, or dismissed careerists struggle to make ends meet while being “in-between real jobs”.
There is growing debate among scholars that The U.S. Labor Department’s employment statistics are skewed in regards to the potential increase of survey particiants or census data that does not appreciate the liklihood of respondants falsifying thier claim that they are unemployed. The denial that even a insignificant job at a pizzaria is also valid employemnt vs. a desired management position in a large company may reveal more aspects of social norms of defining unemployment.
The real job market to analize is the seasonal part-time jobs that have been traditonaly service related jobs where the majority of candidates were teenagers under the age of twenty. Seasonal part-time jobs which have been the life blood for millions of teenagers across North America have fallen under attack from jobless mothers, fathers, graduate students and downsized careerists due to the financial crisis. Only the pace of America’s economic recovery will dictate if this employment trend between teenagers and unemployed adults will continue.However,the U.S. economy is faced with what many economists concur to be a “jobless recovery”; this means that there will be only marginal job creation in the near future but coupled with intense job rotation. This predicament is like the game musical chairs; where the music stops-someone is pushed out of a chair and then hundreds of job applicant or in this case hundreds of teenagers and adults rush for the single standing chair. Albiet for a part-time wage and marginal benefits if any are offered. Some economists argue that this is the unique example of a “imperfectly competitive job market” or “perfectly competitive job market” depending on what view of have and have not you suscribe to this musical chairs example.
Most employers of seasonal part-time employees would rather higher 18 year-old teenage job seekers. This business model is more affordable if you are a small business with no comprehensive group health and life insurance plan–or none at all to offer adult candidates with families. The same adult job candidate may request to be employed longer than the traditional 3 month season and thus qualify for group benefits under most medium and large sized company plans. The anomoly is that some small and large sized comapnies can afford to adult job candidates into part-time job positions with the likelihood of receiving full company sponsored benefits. Only a decade of time past will reveal if this unique competition bewteen two age demographics for the same job market will conitue as a significant economic event in America’s “jobless recovery”.
