Fort Hood Massacre
Nidal Malik Hasan the mass murderer at Fort Hood that killed 13 and injured 30 is in stable condition. Previous reports stated that the suspect was killed after being shot four times. This shooting is the worst catastrophe to ever take place on a U.S. military base.
Fort Hood is the largest based in America population wise. Hasan was an Army major that worked as a psychiatrist. He had previously been working at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He spent everyday counseling veterans and worked mainly with soldiers suffering with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PST).
Hasan was about to be deployed to Iraq. He had never been deployed before and was trying to fight it. He had even hired a military lawyer to try and help him get out. Hasan even offered to pay back for his medical training if they would release him from the army. The army would not release him and Hassan was shortly being deployed to Iraq. He was fighting his deployment to Iraq but told army officials he would go to Afghanistan instead.
Despite his opposition to deployment the killer’s personality has been described by coworkers as quiet and mellow. However, he did have some trouble in his past. Hasan volunteered to join the army but after September 11, 2001 he was harassed for being a Muslim with Palestinian roots. He wanted out of the army and tried for several years but to no avail. He got into some arguments with other soldiers that supported U.S. wars. And he even got into trouble as an intern and required counseling as a medical student because of problems with his patients.
Apparently for the last six months the army had been investigating him for some radical postings on the internet. Although the postings weren’t formally linked to him, officials believe he was responsible. The comments remarked about how a suicide bomber is just like a soldier that jumps on a grenade to save his fellow comrades. There were some problems in this mans past and he was a loner but no one would have even considered the possibility that he would do something like this.
This man was obviously very intelligent but tended to be a loner. He was harassed because of his roots and religion, but that is no excuse for what he did. He took out his comrades that were about to be deployed with him. It’s too bad the army wouldn’t just let him out but if they let him out where would it stop?
Hasan was obviously not quite right. Even though he wanted out of the army why didn’t he just kill himself rather than take out 13 people and injure 30 more. These soldiers were doing their job and about to leave their families behind to fight for this country. This was a tragedy but I just can’t grasp what this man was thinking. Another thing that I can’t fathom is why it took so long to take him down.
They were on a military base so I’m surprised he was able to injure that many people. It seems like on a base there would be more people around that would hear and recognize gunfire. Then armed personnel would quickly take him out. Anyways, this is so sad and our hearts and sympathy go out to the victims and their family and friends. We will be praying for you.
