All Work and No Play?

Heading Off to College
Going back to school is usually a time when students feel both excited and anxious. They’re excited to see friends again, meet new people, learn more in class, and go to college activities. This is particularly true for students fresh out of high school. Most really look forward to their first year in college not for the learning facts but making new friends.
Many students move out of mommy and daddy’s house and get to be adventurous and live their own lives for the first time. They don’t have someone telling them when to be home, when they can hang out with their friends, or when they need to do homework. However, with this freedom comes greater responsibility. So students need to make sure they do their homework and study in order to meet their goals but the question is how much studying is too much? Some students spend their lives in the library and miss out on gaining social skills and miss out on the great times and friends from this time of life.
Important to Find Balance
So where is the balance? Many students have scholarships and need to keep up their GPAs while others just want to excel in their courses, and others are driven to do well. However, students shouldn’t spend all of their time in the library. Academics should not be the sole focus and keeping a balanced life is going to make them a better person and ultimately a better student.
The more balance in life a student has the more they will enjoy school and get more out of it. Students should be focused on school but also participate in extra curricular activities and work part time. Now they shouldn’t go overboard on the social scene either. College is for earning a degree as well as making friends and connections so there needs to be a happy medium.
Students shouldn’t fail their tests because they are out partying all night or put off completing their assignment so much that they end up turning it in late and being docked 20% before it’s even graded. But students should go out and socialize. They need to spend time developing both platonic and romantic relationships and just how to function in society.
Honestly Assessing Your Play Time
Now every student is different so it’s important for them to know who they are and what they can do. College is hectic and stressful so they need to have a handle on everything because severe stress isn’t good for anyone. Students should ask themselves these questions to determine whether it’s time to leave the books and meet up with friends:
- Can I still communicate without stuttering or mixing up the words in my sentence?
- Do I have the glazed look on my face even though I haven’t been drinking?
- Can I remember anything from what I just read?
- Are my friends starting to leave me out because they know if they ask me to go out I’ll say “I have to study”?
Lose Those Textbooks! (temporarily….)
If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions then it’s time to call up some friends and go out. Studying and a 4.0 can only get you so far in life. If you don’t know how to have fun, let loose, and carry on an intelligent conversation with someone else then something is missing from your life and even if you’re in IT, you still may not be able to get a job. So make sure to have some time with your friends or you’ll really miss out on the college experience and it could hurt you later down the road especially when it comes to networking.
