20 Reasons to Go to College Online
Going to college online is an option that wasn’t available to any generation before now. It is now possible thanks to advances in technology and increased acceptance of online
education as a credible way to get a degree. Although there are benefits to going to a traditional, campus-based program, there are also a lot of great reasons to go to college online.
Here are
20 benefits
of an online college education:
- You have your pick of schools nationwide.
- The experience of attending an online college is cheaper.
This is due to the fact that you don’t need to relocate, pay for transportation to school, etc. Tuition may also be cheaper in some instances. - Class times are flexible.
This means that you can go to class during the times of day when you are most productive, efficient and alert. - You learn important computer skills through hands-on experience.
Online classes teach you how to blog, how to participate in online forums, video and voice conferences and how to communicate well in the online format. That’s a really important 21st century skill that you can’t easily learn in a traditional classroom. - It is easier to ask all of the questions that you have.
It can be intimidating to ask question after question in class or to go to official office hours to get direction. Getting your questions answered by your teacher online isn’t nearly as intimidating. - You won’t have to carry textbooks to class.
Although you may work from some traditional textbooks, you’ll also use a lot of online reading material. - You may have more interaction with other students.
This seems counterintuitive since you aren’t in a room with them. However, you have to participate in online conversations for this type of education to work so you may actually talk more with your classmates online than you would in a class that you go to. - You may be able to take a heavier course load and get done with school more quickly.
That’s because you aren’t spending all of that time actually in class. If you are a fast learner, a quick reader and very organized then taking more credits online may work for you. - Online classes don’t provoke as much anxiety about going to school.
This is a serious problem that hinders some people from attending campus-based programs. - You are forced to form and share your opinions.
It’s the only way that an online teacher can know that you’re participating in the class since there is no attendance to take. This is tough for some people but a valuable skill to learn during your college years. - You can work while going to school.
This is due to the flexible class times of an online education. - The experience of online teamwork is valuable.
It’s where we’re going in business in the 21st century and it’s a great thing to learn now. - You can travel while going to school.
You can take your classes from anywhere as long as you have your computer. This means you can see the world or spend time with your family back home as needed without compromising your education. - Your online education course materials will always be available for review.
Unless you take a tape recorder to lectures on campus, this isn’t necessarily true for a traditional college education. - You can take breaks between classes as needed.
You can grab lunch or take that nap that you need and go back to class when you’re ready. - The teachers may have more real world experience.
This varies, of course. However, since online teachers compete with people from around the globe to get their jobs those that are hired usually tend to have the most experience in their fields. - Teachers may find it easier to give you a recommendation.
That’s because they can go back through your work and participation online and see exactly who you are and what you contributed to each class. - You may become more familiar with your local community.
You’ll have to go to the local library. You may work in coffee shops or community meeting rooms. You’ll participate in local internships to get hands-on experience. Although you have the option of staying home, an online education can actually take you out of the house and into your community. - You will be responsible for your own education.
You will have to learn skills related to time management, organization, self-motivation, etc. These are valuable skills. - It may simply work better for you.
Some people learn terrifically in a classroom environment. Others learn best on their own at home in front of the computer. If it just works best for you to get an education online then don’t question it!
You aren’t limited to colleges in your local area and you don’t have to weigh the pros and cons of moving to go to an out-of-state school. This broadens your choice of schools as well as your degree and course study options.
Take your classes through distance learning! Find an online school to suit your needs.

I’m a supporter of online education–I think it opens doors that so many people wouldn’t be able to walk through otherwise. I also like its focus on reading and writing. As a teacher, I’ve taught both ways–in class and online (and a few combinations of both). But there are benefits to being in the same room with your students, as well. This semester I asked not to be given any online classes, only classroom classes, and my husband has always refused to do classes online. There’s no force more powerful in the world than people speaking to other people–not even the internet.
