12 Places to Sell Your Used Textbooks

Someday college students won’t have to pay a fortune for pricey textbooks. Technology will make it possible for students to access all of their class resources online via e-reader programs at a fraction of current textbook prices. However, that day isn’t here yet. Although some teachers are starting to rely heavily on online source material, many still require their students to purchase expensive books. Most students won’t use those books again after the semester has ended.

If you’re a student in this position, you should think about selling your used textbooks. This can be done at the end of the semester during a time when you probably need the money most since your school loan funds are depleted. And it can be done in a lot of different places, more than you may think.

Here are twelve places where you can start if you want to sell your used textbooks:

1. College bookstore. Your campus bookstore is a great place to try to sell back your books at the end of the semester. As long as the book is slotted for use the following semester, the bookstore will usually buy it back. They offer a fair price although not a premium price. The biggest benefit of this option is that it can be a convenient way to sell all of your books at once with no shipping fees.

2. Local bookstore. Another convenient way to sell several books without any shipping costs is to go to a local bookstore that buys and sells used books. Of course, not all bookstores accept textbooks but some will.

3. Amazon. Although many students find it convenient to sell their textbooks locally, others find it more convenient to list the books for sale online. You’ll still need to lug books to the post office to send them but you’ll only need to lug the ones that definitely sold. Amazon is a leading place for listing used books for sale.

4. Half.com. Half.com is another online site where you can list your books for sale. It’s eBay’s bookstore so it’s familiar to people who sell on eBay.

5. Swapbooks.com. This website is set up specifically for students who want to buy, sell and even trade books online. If you’re still going to be in college next semester then swapping can be an optimal choice for keeping textbook costs down!

6. eCampus. This online site allows you to enter the ISBNs for your books online to get a quote of approximately how much money you can get for selling your books. The site offers free shipping, which is a nice benefit.

7. Textbook Buyer. This site is similar to the eCampus site and can provide a great way to sell a bulk set of books back at once through an online system.

8. Books Value. Here is yet another option for students who want an instant quote on the value of their textbooks. Do you see a theme here? It’s true; this is a way that many students are selling their textbooks these days.

9. Textbooks R Us. You can find your book on this site and see how much the site is offering to buy it for. Then you ship the books at no cost and get your money. It’s similar to the last several options so it’s worth it to compare the value of your books across these different sites to get the best price for your investment.

10. Barnes and Noble. That’s right; good old B&N has a textbook buyback system.

11. Other students. There are more old-fashioned ways to sell your books back than all of these Internet options, though. One way is to go directly to the students who are entering the class that you just finished up and to sell the books to them. You may be able to use class bulletin boards to share that you have a book for sale. Alternatively, some teachers will allow you to make an announcement about it on the first day of class.

12. Craigslist. It’s not always easy to get people to purchase textbooks on a classified ad site like Craigslist. However, it is possible. If this is a site that you like to use then it’s worth a try for the resale of your textbooks.

Where do you think is the number one place to sell your textbooks when you’re done using them?
