The Two Best College Movies Ever!

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

These two movies are not necessarily about college, but these flicks are awesome! Whether you’re in college, reminiscing, or trying to figure out what it’s going to be like, watch these movies and at least be incredibly entertained.

Old School

Three guys start a fraternity house in order to avoid “growing up.” Can’t we all relate to not wanting to grow up? These guys throw the sickest parties and everyone on campus loves them; everyone that is except the dean (“Cheeeeeese”), who in college was mercilessly picked on by these guys. “Streaking, we’re going streaking, through the quad into the gymnasium.” I think this was probably one of the most memorable moments of this movie. Brings back memories of my freshman year watching several of my friends streak across campus at 3 in the morning.

Van Wilder

Here’s another movie about a guy not wanting to grow up. Do we see a trend? Van didn’t even get to the point to go back to college, since he never left. Just a few credits shy of graduation, he stayed in college for over seven years, just enjoying life, partying, girls, and living on Dad’s dime. He also hosted great parties! My favorite quote from this movie is, “Don’t take life too seriously – you’ll never get out alive.”

While both of these movies are humorous, outrageous, and for the most part insanely immature, we can all for some reason or another relate to them. Whether you are or were the captain of the football team, president of the chess club, sorority leader, art major, or engineer, there’s someone in these movies who at least a bit reminds us of either who we are, or who we aspire to be. Some of us may relate to the party animal main characters and some of us relate to the dorky kids who are “helped” to come out of their shells by the partiers, but whoever it is, the movies are incredibly amusing!

The Next College Football Player To Watch

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Watch out for Josh Mahoney this season, playing for the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Panthers. This high school standout from Sioux Falls, SD has been impressing everyone who sees him play since he first dressed in the Pathers’ purple and gold. Josh has played every single game since his first, in 2006. His impressive stats and inspiring attitude make him someone we should expect to see great things from.

Even in high school, we knew we should keep an eye on him. His senior year he was the Gatorade South Dakota player of the year. He was also first team all-state twice and three times a first team all-conference. Josh’s high school record includes rushing for 1,031 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 275 tackles. Also a successful wrestler, he placed third at states in 2004 and seventh in 2003.

He doesn’t have much time outside of football and school, but when he does have a few free minutes, Josh likes watching Lost on TV, riding his bike in Wyeth Park, near UNI, or reading. In an interview at UNI he said, “Playing college football and doing well in school is difficult, but I also think it helps me to keep things balanced in my life. Football has given me a lot of self-discipline.” This self discipline is easily evident in Josh’s academic success.

Not only is this guy a powerhouse on the field, he’s also incredibly successful academically. He graduated high school first in his class with a 4.0 grade point average. And just because he’s a star player on a division 1 football team doesn’t mean he’s slacking in his academics in college either. Josh still carries a 4.0 GPA at UNI while studying for a degree in economics and a minor in English. In today’s game, with strategy being almost as important as skill itself, his mind is as great as asset as his strength.

Josh’s 6’1”, 235 lb build has helped him to be slated as one of UNI’s starting outside linebackers for this season. Keep track of this guy, he’s good!
