5 Must See Movies During the Holidays

Monday, December 28th, 2009

The holidays are one of the best times to catch some movies. Hollywood has been releasing so many movies that it’s hard to keep track of which ones you want to see. Well, between Christmas and New Years is the perfect time to go. You may have some vacation days to use and not enough fun planned to fill them.

Movies can provide a fun and entertaining experience for around two hours for a relatively cheap price. And if you can’t afford to go to the night movies then go and hit the matinees. Or if one movie isn’t going to cut it go on  a movie hop and hit one during the day and at night. But these are the 5 best movies to see.

1. The must see movie of the season is Avatar. It doesn’t matter if you’re into that type of stuff or not the reality is that it’s a good movie. They spent tons of money on it and it shows: the graphics are amazing.

2. Sherlock Holmes is also a bigt hit at the box office. Sherlock and his trusty partner Watson endeavor to bring down a nemesis and unravel a plot that could ultimately destroy the country. Will they be able to solve it?

3. One movie that has not done quite as well at the box office as expected is Invictus. But everyone I’ve talked to that has seen it has really liked it but some wished that they had learned the rules of
rugby before going. But overall it’s a great movie plus it has Matt Damon with a South African accent.

4. The Princess and the Frog is Disney’s first movie with an African American princess. They have finally bridged the gap and it is supposedly darling. Plus it’s not only a good movie for girls; boys have also enjoyed it.

5. The Blind Side has been out for a little while but it is still going strong in theatres. The plot is based on a homeless teenager that is taken in by one of his classmates families. Through a mere act of kindness he gradually becomes a member of the family and must overcome different challenges on and off the football field.

These 5 movies are the best choices to see during the holidays. This is one of the best times of the year when it comes to Hollywood releases. Don’t wait and miss out because these movies have been highly recommended by not only movie critics but everyday Americans. Go to the movies and get away from reality for a couple of hours. You owe it to yourself, because you survived the holidyas and maintained your sanity.

The Dos And Don’ts Of Good Cover Letters

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Writing a cover letter can be a tough challenge for some people. How exactly are you going to convey everything that you want? How will you make yourself rise above your competitors, which in this job market is fiercer than ever? One idea is to search for cover letter examples on the web to use as a guide. But even then, you should know what a good cover letter looks like. The good news is that you can follow some easy dos and don’ts to help you realize what should and should not be done. Going off of this kind of basic advice, you will be able to craft your own unique cover letters that will help you land the interview that gets you the career you always dreamed about.

The first “don’t” to remember when writing cover letters is don’t write an entire autobiography. A cover letter should be one page maximum, unless you were specifically told otherwise. This one page has to include all of the critical information that you want to share with this potential employer. This means relevant job histories and experiences, education, and more. Don’t try to make conversation, don’t add filler, and don’t ramble on and on. Stick to the most important points and you’ll make an impression as being direct, while also highlighting all of your best attributes.

One thing you should do is to create your cover letter as specifically as possible to the job that you’re applying to. This means that you shouldn’t have a one size fits all cover letter that you use for every job application. Your cover letter should talk specifically about individual experiences that you’ve had or lessons that you’ve learned that will apply specifically to this position. Talk about why this specific job gets you excited, and why you’d be the perfect candidate.

Still, while you don’t want to have a generic cover letter that you submit to everyone, there’s nothing wrong with crafting a couple of cover letter templates that will speed up the process when you apply to many jobs. For example, maybe you are going after three types of jobs – marketing positions, sales team positions, and entry level sales team management. You can write up a simple template of a cover letter for each of these three types of positions, which go into detail about the experiences and skills that apply to each.

Each time you apply to a specific job, you can fill in the blanks and mention specifically about why you would be a good fit for the job, why you would want it, and why you would excel. You’ll still be creating unique, highly focused cover letters, but you’ll be saving yourself a ton of time by not having to redo it from a blank page every time out.

Finally, the most critical “do” of creating cover letters is that you absolutely should talk yourself up. This is not the time to be modest. You should keep your resume “dry”, but the cover letter is the time to put in some emotion and opinion surrounding the facts. Sell yourself, and make yourself stand apart as different and desirable, or else you’re just another empty sheet of paper that will be put in the trash.

Writing a cover letter is not as an exact science. However, there are some tested and true tips that can make the process easier. Abide by dos and don’ts and you’ll be that much closer to crafting an amazing cover letter. When you do that, your dream job will finally be yours for the taking.

New Internet Craze: Jumping on Beds

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

The newest internet trend is even more bizarre than in the past. Bed-jumping has hit a new high. When everyone was growing up their mothers would sit and tell them not to jump on the beds or couches. But once you hit adulthood you can do whatever you want. So people are posting images of themselves jumping on beds on a blog that’s being hosted by a hotel review site.

Photographs and videos on hotelsbycity.net show guests using beds as trampolines. Some have made up poses like “Superman”, “I dream of Jeannie” hovering above the bed, or thousands of other random shots. This is a craze all over the world. Thousands of beds are being jumped on and millions of pictures being taken to get the perfect shot plus lots of computers to edit and upload the images.

Are you into this craze? If so comment on this blog. Apparently the creator of the site BedJump describes the activity as “completely intoxicating.” I will have to wait and see how exhilarating it is but I bet it’s highly dependent on how good the springs are in the bed. It’s amazing though that this company has been able to turn hotel reviews and hotel space in general into a much more exciting and viral place for visitors. Especially since you can add your images and then rate the beds on how bouncy they are.

How Students Pay For College – Even If Your Parents Won’t!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Want to know how students pay for college? There are a couple of different options available.

1) Parents! Probably the most common method, dipping into your parents’ wallets is also the cheapest and easiest (for the student anyways).

Unless the parents are huge into business or financial responsibility, usually it’s more of a gift than a loan, so the student doesn’t have to worry about being financially burdened forever- pretty nice!

However, reality is a lot of parents can’t afford it, or would rather the student find another way.

2) Student loans are another very common method. Although they do have to be paid back eventually, they usually have very low interest and flexible repayment plans.

While these feel great at the time (look at all that money that just went into my account!), don’t forget that you WILL have to pay these back, and even at 5% rates, the interest on those thousands of dollars in loans add up.

3) Get a part-time job. This is what I personally did for most of my college career, as well as several of my friends. You can wait tables, work on campus somewhere, landscaping or construction, or other similar work.

The extra income is always nice, but if you have an inflexible schedule and a lot of tests or reports coming up, it can be tough to balance everything.

4) OWN a part-time job. This is the method I have recently started embracing, and I highly recommend anyone really searching for ways how students pay for college to look into.

What do I mean by this? Start your own small company. There are lots of options, but probably the cheapest is doing business online through affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is basically where you sell someone else’s product and you earn a commission. All of the hard stuff is handled by the company- all you do is sell the product!

This isn’t a “make $1,000,000 in one month” kinda scam- it’s a method that thousands of people are using every day to make extra money. Some even do it for a full-time living!

Here’s a few reasons why it’s great for college students:

1) Low startup investment. Usually you can start for free, and at most you’ll pay $100-200 to start your business. What other kind of business can start at those prices?

2) Free methods of marketing. Compared to billboards and television ads which cost thousands and thousands of dollars, you can market to a much bigger audience for free! Not bad huh?

3) Flexible hours. No commute. No boss yelling at you for being late. You are the boss! Work at 6 am if you’re an early riser, or midnight if you’re a night owl. Either way works.

4) Bragging rights. Wouldn’t it be cool to be able to say “I make money on the internet?”

I hope this article shared some helpful ways how students pay for college. Personally, I’m biased towards owning your job through affiliate marketing. You’ll learn skills you can use the rest of your life, and not have to take out as much financial aid (chances are unless you’re a marketing wizard you won’t strike it rich right away!). What do you have to lose with trying?
